What is a screenshot beautifier?
A screenshot beautifier places a raw screenshot on a designed background and adds the finishing touches that make it look intentional: space around it, rounded corners, a soft shadow and, if you like, a window frame. The result reads like a product shot rather than a quick capture, without opening a design tool.
Teams use beautified screenshots in release notes, landing pages, slide decks, help articles and social posts. The same screenshot that looks cramped on its own looks finished once it has room to breathe.
What you can change
- Screenshot background: soft gradient presets, solid colors, your own colors, or transparent when you want to place the image on your own design.
- Padding: the space between the screenshot and the edge. More padding feels calmer; less keeps the interface large.
- Corners and shadow: rounded corners and a shadow lift the screenshot off the background.
- Inset: a translucent border around the window, for a layered look.
- Window frame: a macOS-style or browser frame in light or dark, with your own text in the address bar.
- Size: keep the natural shape or fit a fixed ratio or social format.
Padding, corners and frames scale with the screenshot, so a high-resolution capture and a smaller one come out with the same proportions.
Which size should you pick?
Screenshot mockup or plain screenshot?
A framed screenshot mockup works best when the image stands on its own: a feature announcement, a hero image or a social post. Inside a step-by-step help article, keep it simpler. Readers compare the image with their own screen, so a light background and little padding help more than a dramatic frame.
Tips for better-looking screenshots
Capture less
Crop to the part of the interface that matters before you style it. A full desktop with three toolbars shrinks the detail you want people to see.
Match the background to your brand
Use one or two backgrounds across a launch or a docs site. A consistent look makes a set of screenshots feel like one release, not a collage.
Clean the screen first
Close notifications, hide personal bookmarks and use demo data. A beautiful frame draws more eyes to whatever is inside it, including a customer’s name. Blur or black out anything private before you style the image.
Check it at the final size
Social networks show images small. If the text in the interface is unreadable at that size, crop tighter or reduce the padding.
Common mistakes
- Picking a background so busy it competes with the screenshot.
- Using a browser frame on a desktop app, or the other way around, which looks off to anyone who knows the product.
- Exporting a small screenshot to a large social size and getting a blurry result. Start from a sharp, high-resolution capture.
A short example
Say you are announcing a new reports page on LinkedIn. Capture just the report area of the page, not the whole browser window. Add it to the tool, pick a soft gradient that matches your brand, set medium padding and a light browser frame, and type your product’s address in the bar. Choose the LinkedIn size so the image fills the post preview without being cropped, then download it at 2x so it stays sharp on high-density screens. For the matching help article, reuse the same screenshot with the Auto size, a plain light background and less padding, so readers can compare it with their own screen.
